NB: This is a very intensly studied field. Links are to the better meta-sites (sites that aggregate information) or represent the better WWW-based information offerings for reserchers, while the bibliographic notes may be only representative of offerings in this field. However, I will eventually try to list all the useful sites presently available via the WWW.
- --- From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians
- Tells the epic story of the rise of Christianity. The four hours explore the life and death of Jesus, and the men and women whose belief, conviction, and martyrdom created the religion we now know as Christianity. This PBS FRONTLINE series is an intellectual and visual guide to the new and controversial historical evidence which challenges familiar assumptions about the life of Jesus and the epic rise of Christianity. For an overview of the series read the
Synopsis. It includes links to some of the stories and material on this web site which expand the narrative.

- With Their Influence on the Opinions of Modern Christendom. When Christians shall at length acknowledge that many of those doctrines, which together now make up orthodoxy, or the religion of the majority, as distinguished from the simple religion which Jesus taught and practised; when they shall acknowledge that many of them are so many sad and lamentable errors; then, and not till then, will they seek to know their origin, and enquire from which of the several branches of Paganism they sprung. They will then see that most of the so-called Christian doctrines, that have no place in the New Testament, reached Europe from Egypt, through Alexandria. --- Papyrus Egerton 2 Homepage
- Papyrus Egerton 2 is a codex fragment of an unknown gospel, found in Egypt and published in 1935/1987. It is one of the oldest known fragments (around 200 CE), it is neither "heretical" nor "gnostic", it seems to be almost independent of the synoptics and it represents a johannine tradition independent of the canonical John. Additionally it tells us an otherwise unknown miracle story!
