Jews and Judaism in the Greco-Roman Diaspora

  A selection of items from the compendium JIE, Jewish Inscriptions of Graeco-Roman Egypt (William Horbury and David Noy, 1992), and CIJ, the standard compilation, Corpus Inscriptionum Judaicarum. Several other pre-70 CE synagogue inscriptions from Egypt exist; the examples cited are simply the ones illustrated. Translations are from JIE. From the site "SECOND TEMPLE SYNAGOGUES" by Donald D. Binder. This site is devoted to the study of Second Temple Synagogues--that is, synagogues which existed prior to the Temple's destruction in 70 CE.

  The material on this site is largely the fruit of Donald D. Binder's Ph.D. dissertation (SMU, 1997), Into the Temple Courts: The Place of the Synagogues in the Second Temple Period, supervised by Dr. Victor P. Furnish, Dr. Jouette Bassler, Dr. Clifton Black, and Dr. Peter Richardson.

  The question of the Jews and Hellenization seems to be one of perennial interest. Because of the influence of Martin Hengel's various books on the subject, he serves as a useful focus to address the question. Most of the issues have been discussed by him, and those who have taken a different position in recent years have usually done so with explicit reference to him. The purpose of the paper is to give a "once over lightly" to the subject and to introduce the main issues and questions, as well as giving the author's conclusions. The focus of this paper is on the Ptolemaic period, though no discussion can be confined exclusively to that time.
